GETTING THE COURAGE TO PURSUE YOUR DREAMS
“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them”.
We are at the turn of another year, and if you are anything like the average human being, you have a lot of dreams and hopes for the new year, some of which you might have written down in ‘A New Year’s Resolution’.
However, no one has ever said that following your dreams will be easy. Many of us go through many years of hard work, pain, and self-doubt, and have the additional stress of dealing with the uncertainty of whether we can actually achieve our dreams. This makes it extremely hard for a lot of us to follow through, and it takes a lot of courage to keep going.
No matter your dreams and goals, whether it is to exercise more and live more healthily in 2019, whether it is to spend more time with your family, whether it is to leave the dreary job you’ve been at for a couple of years now and launch out on your own as an entrepreneur, or whether your goal is to travel the world starting now, you can do it. What you need is to first gather the courage to chase and pursue your dreams. Because it is only in the pursuit of them that you can attain them.
Courage is required for success, and gathering the courage needed for the occasion and for the moment can give you the inner fortitude to continue on despite setbacks. It is what keeps you going even when all you want to do is to quit.
Here are some tips for gathering the courage to chase your dreams in 2019
Understand that your dream has value: Do not let anyone, including yourself, discredit your dream. What is it that you have always wanted to do? No matter how small or how huge that dream is, do not dismiss it. You owe it to yourself to acknowledge your own dreams, just like you do the dreams of others around you.
Understand that the fear will never leave: Fear lives in us, lives with us, and lives off of us. It is something you cannot eliminate, and the best that you can do is to control your fear. It will, therefore, do you a world of good to first understand that you will find yourself feeling fearful from time to time. You will sometimes feel your heart drop all the way to your knees when confronted with seemingly impossible situations. But you need to remind yourself that fear will never go away and that you will have to act irrespective of your fear.
Understand that you may have to do the same thing over and over again: Most successful people today put in years and years of struggle, doing the same thing over and over and over again before they succeeded at their goal. Understand that you will be no different and that your dream will be no different. Get ready to dig in and get going. Get ready to struggle through the coming months or years. Get ready to put in your best, every day, every week, every month. Get ready to be persistent.
Get ready to embrace challenges: The road to your dreams will be littered with challenges and if you are not ready to embrace challenges, you might as well get off the success wagon now. If you view challenges in a negative light and try to avoid them, you will only compound the challenges and make them bigger. Find value in the challenges you face and face them squarely. It is the only way to succeed.
Appreciate failure: You cannot fully appreciate success until you have had a taste of failure, so you need to understand the role of failure on your road to success. You have to deal with failure; it is inevitable, and it is important that you understand this from the word go. Failure is a great learning opportunity for us to figure out what we did wrong, what went wrong, where we went wrong and how we can take a different approach next time so that we can succeed. A lot of people don’t get started on their dreams because they are afraid that they will fail. The truth is that we all fail; the ones that succeed are the ones who don’t allow their initial failures to tie them down and who learned from their failures.
Associate with those that believe in your dreams: We all need encouragement from our friends sometimes, so to surround yourself with Debbie downers is to shoot yourself in the foot when it comes to the pursuit of your dreams. One of the very best things you can do for yourself is to find the people that support you in your goals so they can help you find the strength to keep going when things get tough. If your new year resolution is to lose weight, don’t surround yourself with people who will rather be couch potatoes and who make fun of everyone trying to get into a healthier shape. When you doubt yourself, the people that believe in you will remind you of your goals and your inherent potential to attain them.
Take concrete steps: It is said that taking the first step is often the hardest part of pursuing your dreams. But you have to take those first steps. What is that small step that you could take right now to set you on the right part? Is it writing a proposal? Is it starting a crowdfunding campaign? Is it dusting your resume? Is it taking more time off work? Is it walking more instead of taking the car everywhere? Whatever that first little step might be, take it. And take it now. Congratulations on your forthcoming success.
